Deva Doll Angie is in da house!

All I can say is WOW! She is amazing, astounding, wonderful and exciting!!! I unpacked her slowly and carefully, relishing every moment and taking loads of pics :o) I would like to share her unveiling with you!

What a load of paperwork on this box!

After removing all of that paperwork I found…..

The original shipper! I know this ’cause it says Deva Dolls right on it, lol!

And inside the shipper……

The “so very pretty” Deva Doll box! Isn’t it gorgeous? And here she is peeking up out of her foamy confines 😛

awsumgal Deva Doll Angie Arrives 5

Even bald she’s lovely!

awsumgal Deva Doll Angie Arrives 6

Here are her accessories including her laminated collector card stating that she is number 26 of 40. Cool.

awsumgal Deva Doll Angie Arrives 7

And she’s free!!!! By that I mean of course “liberated” as opposed to having no cost attached to her, lol!

awsumgal Deva Doll Angie Arrives 8

I love her wig, I didn’t think I would like it so much, but I really do! It’s so very BladeRunner :o)

awsumgal Deva Doll Angie Arrives 9

The interesting thing about her wig is that it’s very much like the semi rigid wigs that I make. That surprised me. I thought there was something near mystical about a “hard cap wig”. Not so! Now I realize that my semi rigid ones have some advantages over a straight up hard cap. They’re waterproof for one, they won’t crack and they fit different dolls….

Anyway back to the diva, lol. She’s just a beautiful doll. She’s weighty, tightly strung and painted flawlessly. She poses like no other doll I have had before and that is exciting!

She and I enjoyed a photo shoot today and I think I took about 200 shots! The camera loves this girl!!! So here are few shots that I took (I edited brutally). She’s modelling wigs and clothing by me. The white silk peau de soie strapless bustier top is part of an outfit for the Sybarites that I’m in the middle of…. but Angie wanted to borrow it, lol. Frankly their not really all that close in size. It makes me wonder how outfits can be marketed for both girls. I guess if the style is not too form fitting, or is stretchy that work probably work……

Without further blather, here are some shots of Angie…

There just isn’t anything that doesn’t look terrific on her!

Now I just need some cool props but unless I can make some of my own, they’ll have to wait :o)

I am smitten! I think shes fabulous and I hope you do too :o)

Thanks as always for reading and have a wonderful day!

Venice Carnival Topper Dawn

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnial custom Topper Dawn Doll 1

This vintage doll has been given a new lease on life as a reveler at Venice Carnival!

Her costume is entirely custom designed and handmade. The beading has all been done by hand. The gown itself has been machine sewn and hand finished. The sumptuous peau de soie white silk skirt has been trimmed with vintage bronze trim and hand beaded and is the perfect basis for the lavishly printed and metallic accented quilting cottons of the pieced bodice and overskirt. The overskirt has been trimmed with metallic gold crochet loop trim and embellished with beads sewn on by hand. The bodice has been carefully fussy cut and has tiny beads sewn on. The back of the bodice fastens with four brass bead “buttons” and black handknotted thread loops. Her form fitting stretch sleeves are edged in an ecru looped trim adorned with tiny glass hand sewn on beads at the wrist. At the shoulder, the sleeves are edged in fine twisted drapery cord that has had metallic gold thread wound in. This costume is really not designed to be removed.

This Venetian lady has a traditional white permanently attached white mask. She has blue eyes, gold shadow and gold lips edged in black and decorative filigrees all painted by hand in artist quality acrylic paint. All has been UV sealed.

She wears a custom made headdress. It is made of more of the overskirt fabric, lined in bronzey gold lamé. It has long black mesh trails and black and big gold beads. The edges of her headdress have hand sewn tiny glass beads and tiny sequins. She has two bead embellished metal bronze toned fans sewn onto the headdress that serve as a decorative collar. This head dress is also not really designed to be removed.

This doll carries a gold sphere topped black staff. The sphere has been metal leafed and varnished for longevity. The staff has black mesh falls and a pretty rhinestone chain collar under the sphere. The shaft has been wrapped with gold toned wire.

Lastly, on her feet she wears a custom pair of golden pumps. They have holes for a Dawn type stand.

This doll is in good vintage condition. She is a vintage doll from 1971 however and is used. She has all of her fingers and toes. Her knees have minimal greening (as is common with vintage Dawns) but you can’t see her legs anyway. (You can’t see her shoes either but I still gave her some :o) She used to be a standard Glori (K11, I believe) on a standard Topper Hong Kong body. She will come with a signed certificate of authenticity.

Feel free to comment and ask any questions you may have!

Thanks for visiting and have a great day!

Venice Carnival OOAK Dawn WIP5 and Final!

Well, she’s done! I’m so very pleased. She looks just as I hoped she would. This wee gal took quite a lot of hours to complete, but they were enjoyable hours for me :o)

When I last posted, I mentioned that there was one more accessory to do for this doll. It is a decorated staff, or long walking stick. No everyone carries them, and in truth most of the ones I’ve seen were held by men. Despite that, I was taken with the look of them, that I wanted my girl to have one anyway. Makes her look regal and powerful!

I wanted a gold mirror finish sphere on the top of my staff. I had trouble finding anything suitable and though I considered a mirror finish gold paint, I wasn’t confident it would give me the look I was going for. It turned out for the best though, as I decided to metal leaf a wood ball instead. I chose a wood sphere which I had to drill a hole in for the shaft. (Then there would be no hole at the top!) The drilling proved a little tricky until I clamped it really well. It keep shooting away!

Here’s how the leafing looked part way through…

And here is the staff almost completed…. I’ve added some black mesh and some mid gauge brass beading wire. I added a pretty piece of rhinestone chain under the sphere on the final ’cause it needed a little WOW :o)

The last thing I did for her was a pair of tiny little golden shoes. I’ve made them with holes to accommodate a traditional Topper Stand, although, she stands well without one because of her terrific peau de soie silk skirt!

All right, without further ado, I give you the finished doll! I hope you like her!

This little lady will be for sale through my blog/website later today. A paypal link will appear both on the blog and on my website at www.awsumgal.com when the rest of the pics and description are ready. But, of course, there is only one, and as such paypal will only allow one to be sold.

I hope you’ve had fun watching her come together :o) I’m off to prep the rest of those pics to be posted a little later…..

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Venice Carnival OOAK Dawn WIP 4

Work is progressing well on this doll. I’m very happy with her. There’s really just one last thing to do for her and it requires a trip to the shops which I can’t do today :o( But, I’m getting ahead of things here….

Last time I was working on her gown but I was not happy with how the trim looked on the sleeves. It had unraveled somewhat when I sewed it on. So… I did it again. I treated some more of the trim so that it wouldn’t unravel and sewed that on. Then I added a little sparkle by way of some sewn on very tiny glass beads.

awsumgal Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4.1

I think it looks great!

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-2

When I was happy with that, I attached the sleeves to the rest of the gown.

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-3

I also attached that wound cord that I made last time and sewed that over her shoulders. It looks just as I hoped it would! I also added a few tiny beads to the bodice as part of its’ graphic design.

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-4

Then it was time to make the final decisions regarding her face mask and her head dress. I had a look in mind but hadn’t quite decided how I would execute the vision. So, I played around a little with some different fabrics and embellishments.

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-5

This looks a little macabre. Too much black, I think. Black is necessary, just not too much :o) The headdresses tend to be really interesting and elaborate. They are decorated lavishly and often folded like origami! Truly they are amazing! So of course I want mine folded and embellished too. Mine is the overskirt fabric lined with gold lamé to look gorgeous folded over, of course!

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-6

I’ve noticed that most of the costumes show almost no skin at all. (I think it’s a little chilly during Carnevale, or maybe they prefer total anonymity!) I needed something under her chin, as is the style. I had a little trouble finding something light and floaty enough looking for such a small scale. I found this nylon mesh gave me the best effect. I had already began the mask process on the actual doll, so this Longlocks became the stand-in while I wanted for each layer of the mask to cure totally. (I mean, I had to do something. It was many layers and was like like watching paint dry, lol!) I’ve got to work in somewhere those metal fan charms that I bead embellished too…

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-7

On to the mask in process! I tried a few different ways for the mask. I wanted it to be substantial enough to to have some depth. I toyed with the idea of casting a mask of her and then cutting out the eye holes, but in the end it wasn’t giving me the look I was after. The masks are quite that real looking if you know what I mean. The noses and lips of these masks are very smooth, more of a suggestion of nose and lips rather than actually a nose and lips. So the casting idea was too detailed to look the way I wanted. (It was also a giant pain in the backside to cut teeny tiny eyeholes out of, but that’s another story!)

So here’s what I went with. It’s very mask like, has dimension off of her face at the edges and around the eyes. The white is all done and I am beginning the eyes in the pic below.

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-8

I wanted her eyes to be a colour in the same family as the blue of her overskirt and headdress fabric, only lighter and I think I have found it. Then some gold eyeshadow with black accents and gold and black lips, all in acrylic paints. A little hard to do. You really only have one chance to get it right! To remove a mistake would ruin the white of the mask and require substantial reworking. No pressure, lol!

I’m just about happy with her look, but need to make just a few more adjustments and she’ll be done :o)

awsumgal ooak Venice Carnival Topper Dawn wip 4-9

The next time you see her, she’ll be ready to revel at Carnival!

Thanks for reading and remember to watch this space for the final reveal!
