Vintage Batgirl for Dawn – Finished :)

That’s it she’s finished and off to her new home. When I last posted, I was in the near stages of completion with just a lot of little details to complete. I had to finish off the belt and then attach it to her, finish off the gloves, add varnish to her heels and belt buckle, perfect her hair and add her hood, and of course add the bat logo to her her costume!

Here’s a little bit of the gloves. Firstly, because I’m using a silk that likes to fray and dissipate to nothing with just the slightest hint of a breeze, (but it’s the perfect colour!) it needs to be handled carefully. The gloves are miniscule! I’m using a fusible interfacing to stabilize the silk. I’ve pressed it to the silk before cutting.

I’d just like to make a side note about the fabric colours throughout the blog posts for this project. The fabrics I’m using have optical dyes in them. The colour of both the silk and the sparkly unitard fabric are both a lovely grape-y purple. When photographed with flash these both appear navy blue. I’ve tried to colour correct throughout, but some shots are better than others….

I did as much as possible with machine, but the rest will need to done on doll πŸ™‚

You can see even with careful and minimal handling, this silk still wants to fly apart! Now that the gloves are completely hand sewn onto the the forearms, the fabric is never coming apart!

After all that, it was time for a final photo shoot. I give you Batgirl!

Looks like Batgirl is striding off to keep Batman out of trouble, or more likely, require saving πŸ˜‰

Hope you enjoyed coming along with me while I whipped up this girl! Thanks so much for reading πŸ™‚

Vintage Batgirl for Dawn WIP 3

Happy Friday dolly peeps!

Lots to get through here as this project is picking up speed! This girl’s got aΒ mind of her own and places to be πŸ™‚

Let’s start with the lady herself then today. Here’s the lovely Glori pre Batgirl …

Her hair is a little mussy, but nevermind. She’ll be receiving a spa treatment before long…

She is nonplussed that I’m showing her first with messy hair, and then, horror of horrors, with curlers and plastic wrap and pipe cleaners! She is totally scandalized! (But then again, she’s also bodyless at the moment, so what’s she’s going to do?)

She’ll be happy again when I show her all prettied up πŸ™‚

This vintage Batgirl is modeled, as you already know, after Yvonne Craig’s portrayal. I didn’t know very much about Yvonne Craig before I started. I didn’t know for instance that she trained as a ballerina. That explains those awesome kicks that Batgirl could deliver! Bam! Biff! I didn’t realize her other acting credits either. I guess I didn’t recognize her out of her Batgirl mask. I didn’t know she played Marta, the slinky seductive green alien girl in the original Star Trek opposite my man Kirk πŸ˜‰ Here’s a link to her official fanpage if you’d like to know more about her.

Here’s Glori after her hair treatment. She has blue eyes now, like Yvonne, and a more accurate lipcolour…

Still needs a little taming. Most of it will hide under her hood and her half mask, but if she ever takes it off, she’ll be pretty underneath! Speaking of her mask…

Good thing I have a little Dawn wigstand so I don’t have to make the mask on a doll πŸ™‚

I like how this is looking πŸ™‚ Still has to be cut of course, but it looks like it should I think.

On to the belt. After carefully cutting out the utility belt boxes and foldingΒ them. I’ll be gluing them up and then painting them to match the inside of her silk cape. The Mask looks on, lol!

Batgirl2WIP3wThose other little bits are the ears of course!

I’ve added a loop to the back of each of the little box pouches for her belt, so they can slide back and forth on the gold leather belt πŸ™‚Batgirl7WIP3w

The belt buckle with the logo is next. I’m using a leather piece for the basis and am painting the Batlogo onto it. Varnish atop for protection. Trimmed the mask as well πŸ™‚

Batgirl8WIP3wMore assemblage of tiny bits….

Bits, bits and more bits!

Shoes! Well the heels and soles anyway πŸ™‚

Batgirl6WIP3wHere’s how the belt looks on her hips…

Batgirl12WIP3wA little bit of touch up here and there is needed.

We’re closing in on the finish line here. Next time, I’ll attach her mask and her hood, put her cape on, add the gloves and the soles and heels. Lastly I’ll place her Batgitl logo onto her chest as a ceremonial last act, and she’ll be ready to travel to her new home πŸ™‚

Right, I’m feeling a power surge, so back to the studio while the creative fire burns!

Thanks for reading!

Vintage Batgirl for Dawn WIP 2

Well hello there and welcome to WIP 2! Meant to blog yesterday but you know, real life sometimes has to take precedent. Needs must and all of that. Not that work didn’t get done mind you, quite the contrary.

Progress made on the hood, the ears, the boots, the unitard, the belt. It’s all happening! The only thing I haven’t worked on yet are the gloves, but this morning in my prewaking miasma when it’s quiet and nothing else has yet intruded into my consciousness (love that time!) I came up with a plan of execution for them that I am eager to try out. The purple silk you see is proving a little tricky to manipulate on this small scale, and the gloves have those little spikes…. tricky, but not completely impossible.

There are so many fun details to tackle in this costume πŸ™‚

First off, here’s the beginnings of the hood. Just a quick fit test. Doesn’t look like much, but it will after the edges are finished properly. It’ll be open at the nape of the neck to allow her curled red hair to fall freely. Glori’s hair isn’t curled like Yvonne Craig’s yet, but it will be. (Her eyes will be blue too!)

Her hood needs ears of course. They’re fairly big in real size, but pretty teeny tiny for Dawn!

A little fusible interfacing will help me tame this silk! The outside face of the ears are black and will be leather for this version.

Here’s a Β little bit on her utility belt. The original belt is metallic gold and I have the most terrific metallic gold leather for it πŸ™‚ The center belt buckle will be black leather with a tiny yellow bat logo. I’ll be making little tiny yellow box pockets too. I’ve roughed out, size as, how the belt should be laid out…

I’ve plotted out the tiny utility boxes. There are four and I want them all to be alike. If I can leave them so that they can open, I will. But it might not be possible ’cause they’re so tiny. In the pic, you can see against the ruler how small they are! I will paint them yellow πŸ™‚

Much tiny paper and leather cutting later and it’s beginning to take shape.

Her purple sparkly unitard went swimmingly! I absolutely Love this fabric. The quality is extreme and that makes it so easy to work with!

I’ve started on her boots as well. Just the soles and kitten heels left to go πŸ™‚

It’s all coming together and starting to look the real deal. Next time I’ll be working on her face mask, gloves and heels along with the rest of her utility belt. After that, it’ll down to hair style and eye colour update πŸ™‚

Have a great day everybody and thanks as always for reading!

New Project :) Vintage Batgirl!

It’s finally time for Batgirl-Batman’s most helpful female companion!

The version I’m going to try and create is the wonderful looking character portrayed by Yvonne Craig in the mid 1960’s.

I’ve been watching old Batman episodes on Youtube, getting a good grounding in what she’s wearing, and now everything in my head is punctuated by Biff, Blam and Pow in giant cartoony letters, lol!

Batgirl, as we all remember, wears an awesome royal purple sparkly stretch unitard with a purple cape lined in golden yellow, a purple hood with ears, darker purple partial facemask, purple gloves and purple kitten heeled boots. And of course her golden utility belt.

The first challenge was the fabric for the skin tight suit itself. Even choosing the right colour for it was something not to be taken lightly, because depending on what promo photo you were looking at, sometimes it looked positivelt blue and some times royal purple. After watching the episodes and looking through as many pics as I can find,Β I’m sold that it’s royal purple πŸ™‚

The skintight suit needed to be made out of stretchy fabric and this proved difficult to find until I stumbled upon Funkifabrics. They’re fabrics are terrific quality and worth every penny (or pound, as they’re in the UK!) Even then though, it’s a leap of faith in terms of colour. You know, colours on your monitor may not be as they appear yada, yada….

Life’s risky, so you know, dive in. Take the risk, order the fabric, lol! Wait by the mailbox until it arrives…..

Then it arrives,

it couldn’t be more perfect! This stuff is amazing!Happy joy dance ensues.

Back to work now though. Focus, pay attention, me, not you!

The cape. Hmm, the cape. At first, I though, yes right, now as few seams as possible, do it circular.

I’ll add weights to the hem points so that it drapes. The purple silk I’m using is happy to drape. Not so much the stretchy gold lame. Hmm. I know it needs weights! So I sew drapery weights very carefully on the inside of the cape. I turn it right side out. Looks a little like a squid, lol! Cute, sort of, but you know not a cape. So ok, now it needs lines of stitching between each batty panel. So I try that. It hangs like a fatigued squid now.

So, no, go away and think some more.

Shelve the squid!

Rethink your earlier disdain for seams. Silk is (a least in this instance) thin and so, seams can be handled! Below, is a non-circular paneled version…

So I try again with panels, and I do it with lovelyΒ purple silk and the gold lame. And then I realize, the metallic gold lame is wrong. I mean, her cape is not metallic. Yes, it’s gold and it’s shiny like satin, but not metallic gold. It’s shiny like satin. So duh, how about some butter yellow golden satin then? Preferably silk.

(The silk I used in the above example is gorgeous, and amazing, but it has an inherent stiffness and doesn’t, yes, you guessed it, drape!)

So off to the fabric store. They don’t of course have butter yellow golden silk. (I seem to have a little trouble finding exactly what I want. Maybe I’m just super picky…. yup, that’s probably it.) But, they do have dye! And I have lovely white silk satin at home. Who doesn’t, lol!

So now silk is quietly turning a lovely yellow hue even as I write this. When it’s all dry I can continue on with the sewing πŸ™‚ In the above pic, the brightest yellow is the dyed silk, (still wet, it dries slightly lighter) the white piece is an example of how polyesther doesn’t take dye (at all) and the lovely but too stiff silk I already had πŸ™‚

Until next time πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading!
