I’m off on a new project! This one has kind of been a long time coming. We began talking about this in the summer, but I’ve only just recently started the work :o)
I’ve been asked to create a Michael Jackson from the video for the song “Bad”. Here’s the look :o) Much black and many buckles and rings! Fun, fun, fun!
This project is on a smaller scale. A vintage Topper Gary will be the doll of choice for this. Gary is a 6 1/4 ” vintage vinyl and plastic doll from the early 70’s. Dawn’s fella :o)
Here’s the boy I’m using…. Pardon his nudity, lol!
This man is in very nice condition. He’ll be perfect for this!
You may have noticed that this is a pale faced dude. He’s too light to be Michael. Van, the African American Topper boy doll is far too dark to be Michael. It’s much easier to darken a too light doll, than to lighten a too dark doll, so Gary it is! More on that later.
First, it’s wardrobe! After watching “Bad” in a continuous loop for far too long, lol, I know what needs doing…Gauntlets, jacket, henley T, black skinny jeans, boots, all with buckles and rings! Woohoo! I’d best get started, lol!
Pants, first look. The faux pockets are deep enough to put Gary’s hand in. That’s cool, I like that! They have front fly top stitching (the pocl=kets are top stitched too!) but they’re too loose in the leg. Michael’s pants are much closer fitting…..
I tightened them up considerably and added the red detailing to one outseam (just like Michael’s!)
The pants will need lots of hardware! Buckles and rings aplenty :o) Next I did his henley T shirt. I found a very thin T shirt jersey fabric that is perfect for his T shirt.
Since Michael is likely going to wear mostly this shirt, maybe only this shirt? I haven’t lined it. I will add a couple of bead “buttons” to the placket type opening.
On to his jacket! (I’m really ripping along here aren’t I, lol!
Here are some of the pattern bits for his jacket :o)
I’ll be sewing that up next but I haven’t done it yet, so I’ll show that next time.
Next up, of buckles and belts, lol!
There aren’t any small enough buckles that I have ever found. Maybe one day someone will make them. I guess the market’s just too small ;o)
So I’ve made my own. Silver plated copper wire is my weapon of choice for this. Michael has a dizzying number of these on this outfit….
I’ll be trimming the excess wire and using a very narrow ribbon for the straps. There are two sizes of buckles that he wears. The above are the larger. The ones in the photo below are the smaller ones. (Just to give you an idea of scale, the yellow squares on the green mat are one inch square.) Michael has two belts on in this video. A medium width black studded one with ring details and a doubled brown one, also studded. I’ll be using real leather for his belts…
Here’s the black one with it’s buckle, studs and rings on :o)
Here are the two belts all studded and ready to go!
I think they look quite good :o)
Still need to do his jacket, add a buch of rings and buckles, boots, gauntlets skin tone darkening, face paint and wait until you see what I have planned for his hair!
Until next time, thanks for reading and have a great day!
