Topper Gary Becoming ~Michael Jackson-Bad!~ Done!

Yes it’s true! He’s finished and I’m very satisfied with the end product :o)

Let me just very quickly back up and show the last few finishing bits of his outfit. There isn’t anything that he wears in this gear from Bad that doesn’t have multiple buckles on it. Many very small buckles were made and sewn to very narrow ribbon and then sewn to where they needed to be! They are all functioning buckles and can be undone if desired. (I certainly wouldn’t though,  ’cause I wouldn’t look forward to the time and tweezers it would take to do them all back up again, lol! Especially the gauntlet ones. Man alive but I made them tiny!

Michael gets his pant leg buckles….

Here’s the outfit on the dude himself!

Here are his short leather boots. Of course these have buckles too…. I’ve given the soles some tread

Lastly are his gauntlets which you guessed it are basically a series of buckles. Michael’s real wrist gauntlets are slightly different. They trace around his middle finger for example. I considered sewing a “studded” strap right through his hand, but then decided I didn’t want to weaken the vinyl of his hand by doing that. It would probably have broken his finger off over time and anyway you wouldn’t be able to take it off. I prefer not to have clothing permanently attached when possible but that’s just me :o)

All right enough of that, here’s the finished man himself!

This dude has a head of real mohair, his boots and belts are real leather, pant and jacket are black twill and his two T shirt, one black, one white are poly cotton. I gave him his chin cleft and shading through his cheeks to make him look as much like Michael as possible.

I hope you like him and have enjoyed watching the work come together. Thanks for reading :o)

Topper Gary Becoming ~Michael Jackson-Bad!~ WIP 3

Michael is almost finished! I’m pretty excited about how he looks. His facial and body colouring has turned out really well! His “Bad” duds have huge numbers of buckles and rings. There’s even a zipper or two! That’s what I working on now, In fact that’s the bulk of the work that’s left to do for him. So here’s how I decided to tackle the buckles and rings…

He has a band around each thigh and a suspended ring as well. I did those first.  The next shot shows just how small these little details really are :o)

There’s one of the thigh straps…

The jacket is looking good too. If you remember, it is has jean jacket styling. I started attaching the many buckles :o)

And… a few more…..

All of those straps will be fastened around Michael’s arms when I put in on him :o)

Then I made his gauntlets. These will be full of buckles and some other embellishments too :o)

I did hit a snag though on this project. The doll above is not, of course, Michael. He’s the Gary I was using as my fit model. This left the Michael Gary doll free to be worked on in parallel. I began removing his outfit in preparation for finishing, and found an awful lot of dye transfer from his shirt. Only on his vinyl arms, not his plastic torso, but it sure didn’t take long! I’ve never had black transfer that fast. That’s why I always line, especially if it’s black. I hadn’t planned to line this shirt because I wanted it to fit really colse to the  body, and I am fairly sure my client isn’t going to change his clothes anyway…but…. those of you who know me know what comes next!

Yes, that’s correct. Now he has a white undershirt! I don’t want all of that careful body blushing marred by dye transfer! I will be trimming his white sleeves sewing the black ones to them in a permanent “pushed up to the elbow” look. I have also made him a little pair of white socks for the same reason. In my limited experience though it is incomparable material, black leather is hands down the worst dye transfer medium on Earth!

Here’s that incredibly versatile, wonderful material as a wee shoe for Michael. Hence the white socks! Lug sole to be attached :o) Lots of hand stitching goes into these shoes. Surprising considering their diminutive size. The leather is not very accommodating to my needles either and I went through two on this pair of shoes :o/

Both of his shoes are done and frankly my eyes are tired, lol!

Just one, or possibly two more work periods will be needed, and then Michael will be complete!

Thanks for reading, have a lovely evening!

Topper Gary Becoming ~Michael Jackson-Bad!~ WIP 1

I’m off on a new project! This one has kind of been a long time coming. We began talking about this in the summer, but I’ve only just recently started the work :o)

I’ve been asked to create a Michael Jackson from the video for the song “Bad”. Here’s the look :o) Much black and many buckles and rings! Fun, fun, fun!

Michael Jackson bad_jacket

This project is on a smaller scale. A vintage Topper Gary will be the doll of choice for this. Gary is a 6 1/4 ” vintage vinyl and plastic doll from the early 70’s. Dawn’s fella :o)

Here’s the boy I’m using…. Pardon his nudity, lol!

This man is in very nice condition. He’ll be perfect for this!

You may have noticed that this is a pale faced dude. He’s too light to be Michael. Van, the African American Topper boy doll is far too dark to be Michael. It’s much easier to darken a too light doll, than to lighten a too dark doll, so Gary it is! More on that later.

First, it’s wardrobe! After watching “Bad” in a continuous loop for far too long, lol, I know what needs doing…Gauntlets, jacket, henley T, black skinny jeans, boots, all with buckles and rings! Woohoo! I’d best get started, lol!

Pants first….

Pants, first look. The faux pockets are deep enough to put Gary’s hand in. That’s cool, I like that! They have front fly top stitching (the pocl=kets are top stitched too!) but they’re too loose in the leg. Michael’s pants are much closer fitting…..

I tightened them up considerably and added the red detailing to one outseam (just like Michael’s!)

The pants will need lots of hardware! Buckles and rings aplenty :o) Next I did his henley T shirt. I found a very thin T shirt jersey fabric that is perfect for his T shirt.

Since Michael is likely going to wear mostly this shirt, maybe only this shirt? I haven’t lined it. I will add a couple of bead “buttons” to the placket type opening.

On to his jacket! (I’m really ripping along here aren’t I, lol!

Here are some of the pattern bits for his jacket :o)

I’ll be sewing that up next but I haven’t done it yet, so I’ll show that next time.

Next up, of buckles and belts, lol!

There aren’t any small enough buckles that I have ever found. Maybe one day someone will make them. I guess the market’s just too small ;o)

So I’ve made my own. Silver plated copper wire is my weapon of choice for this. Michael has a dizzying number of these on this outfit….

I’ll be trimming the excess wire and using a very narrow ribbon for the straps. There are two sizes of buckles that he wears. The above are the larger. The ones in the photo below are the smaller ones. (Just to give you an idea of scale, the yellow squares on the green mat are one inch square.) Michael has two belts on in this video. A medium width black studded one with ring details and a doubled brown one, also studded. I’ll be using real leather for his belts…

Here’s the black one with it’s buckle, studs and rings on :o)

Here are the two belts all studded and ready to go!

I think they look quite good :o)

Still need to do his jacket, add a buch of rings and buckles, boots, gauntlets skin tone darkening, face paint and wait until you see what I have planned for his hair!

Until next time, thanks for reading and have a great day!
