One more MH Skelita Halloween girl :) Esmeralda!

I’ve listed one more Skelita repaint and redress in honour of Halloween.

This ghoulish beauty is currently on offer in my Etsy shop. I don’t have in process pics of the painting progression, but you all have seen that a million times from me anyway, yes? Drop me a line if you would want more of that. This time though I took a few shots as I made her bow.

The violin itself is a cute wooden Christmas ornament that I tweaked the strings on, removed the hanger and added a chinrest. The bow I made from scratch.

First I carved and whittled down a piece of wood. The wood needed to be as wide as the width of the frog. Trying to attach tiny pieces of wood for the frog and the end of the bow would have been a waste of time. Nothing would have stayed and the moment you touched it, it would have fallen apart. So I started with a larger piece of wood (birch, I think, not balsa, too soft).

Here it is carved, but not sanded and of course not painted, and the violin, pre chinrest. I drilled holes for eventual stringing with the tiniest drill bit I could find.

Here it is with paint. I used a real bow for reference and tried to emulate what a real bow looks like.

And here it is “strung” I have glued the knots on both ends of by bow strings and when that’s dry I will trim the excess and varnish again. I will also add a little clear elastic loop to help Esmeralda hold her bow as she should.

She’s a virtuoso on the violin and has taken it with her into the afterlife. Here are some photos πŸ™‚ Her dress has a faux suede bodice and pink sparkly and black mesh full skirt. The gown is accented with pink Swarovski pearl beads and black seed beads on the pink floss tie shoulder straps and two more pink Swarovski pearls and hand knotted thread loops as fasteners at the back.

Penelope – ooak Monster High Skelita Repaint and Redress

Good morning doll lovers,

I’ve just finished, in honour of the changing seasons around here, a repainted and redressed, fully body blushed Monster High Skelita doll that I have named Penelope.

She’s not unhappy about her current bodily situation, but it does get a little lonely especially when her friends are not about. So, she wanders the cemetery at night with her lantern, looking for lost friends….

In process…

So, sometimes I take copious quantities of photos as I work, and sometimes, well I just forget. If I’m working and I don’t have a lot of time and I’m on a roll, I just keep going and then lament the fact that I didn’t pause and take some shots. But, well, it happens….

I did take some shots as I made the lantern though πŸ™‚ And I have some NWS (if you can call a skeletal nude not work safe?!) shots of her full blushing/paint job sans vetements.

The Lantern:

It is made of water colour paper that has been cut and painted and varnished. Inside is a little candle with a long wick of black, blue, yellow and orange made of stiffened cotton, painted and varnished, acetate that has been painted with the yellow glow of the candle forms the “glass” and a decorative ring handle on the top so Penelope can carry her lantern with her wherever she goes.

First I decided on a design. I wanted something mildly medieval and a little goth. It couldn’t be too very intricate cutting wise due to the scale, but I wanted some visual interest of course..

PLantern1wipw

After all the cutting came the test fold to make sure it would go together well… I’ve left tabs on here and there for gluing πŸ™‚

PLantern2wipw

Before putting it together permanently, I wanted to get the painting done. Apart from being easier overall, it made painting the inside feasible (I mean what old lantern is white inside?) Also, glue doesn’t take water based paints so well, and I didn’t want random white bits on my old medieval type lantern, so paint first and then glue!

PLantern3wipw

I’ve painted the candle to look as though the light from the flame decreases towards the bottom of the candle pillar.Β I’ve added the cotton which will be stiffened and then painted in what I hope will be realistic flame colours πŸ™‚ I’ve added a piece of wire to my chosen pretty ring carry handle which will keep the handle securely attached to the lantern.

Here are those NWS body shots. πŸ˜‰

You can see that I have painted some mossy bits on her here and there. She’s been wandering the cemetery for a Long time! She also has a few well placed tiny bug friends on her, which she doesn’t mind at all. They give her someone to talk to while waiting for her other ghostly friends to come out.

Penelope’s hair has been modified as well. The random orange and blue locks original to her were carefully removed along her front hairline, and this has been rerooted, lock loop sew in method, with the same hair fiber in the same colour with the exception of course of her white streak which is mohair. The flower is a permanent addition.

The dress I’ve made for her is a lovely medium ecru fabric with lots of petal texture. It has factory applied petals and blooms all over. I have strategically added a few here and there for more balanced look. The attached bodice is a simple chiffon crossover with a sewn on flower decorating the waist. The same kind of flower that adorns Penelope’s hair. There is an attached petaled fabric fall that affords lots of posing options.Β The dress is easily removable and fastens with two snap closures. One at the waist and one at the back neck.

Penelope does not have painted catchlight in her eyes. Her eyes have been finished in a 3D gloss to catch the light naturally wherever she is displayed. (There is someone out there claiming to have devised this type of eye finishing and claiming it as his own. Well maybe he made it up on his own and maybe her didn’t. I don’t know, but I do know that I do it and have done it for years and lots of other great customizers do it too! So there’s that!)

Currently this lady is available on my Facebook page, but I’ll be moving her to ebay probably later today and will update the blog with the listing info when I have it.

Thanks for dropping in πŸ™‚

Desperately Seeking Susan Skull Case Bigger – WIP 4

This post is all about the interior lining. I want it to look like Susan’s case, even on the inside. Hers has an elastic topped lid pocket, so I’ll be including one of these in my version too πŸ™‚

I’ll be using a card backing with a layer of padding to give the lid silk and pocket a little structure and softness. It’s backed with muslin for durability. Below, I’m testing the look of the pocket on the card backing. Looks about right πŸ™‚

WIP4CaseLining3w

Then I sewed the pocket to the silk backing and then the whole thing to the muslin backing. I left as small an opening for the card as I possibly could. I didn’t want to sew too much of this by hand. Machine stitching is much more robust! Then I needed to insert the card into this before attaching permanently into the case lid. To get it into the opening I gently rolled it and unrolled it when it was all the way inside.

WIP4CaseLining4w

Here goes …..

WIP4CaseLining5w

Success! Yay!

WIP4CaseLining6w

The bottom edge just needs to be stitched πŸ™‚

Test fit!

WIPCaseLining7

On to the case bottom lining. Firstly I’ve added some padding into the bottom of the case to provide a soft place for whatever precious bits will be packed in here πŸ™‚

WIPCaseLining8w

You can see the loop strap tie ins in the above shot. I will be replacing these with fresh black grosgrain ribbon ties.

WIPCaseLining9w

Again, I wanted some structure here. I don’t want the sides of the silk lining to sag, so I’ve sewed the gathered silk sides to a heavy duty stiff Β interfacing and to the silk bottom piece.

And … tra-la!

(This stuff always looks so easy on the blog, lol! I assure you, dear reader that much time was devoted to gathering, evenly distributing the gathers and then sewing to the interfacing – but I digress!)

Tra-la!

WIPCaseLining10w

Some super fantastic waterproof awesome adhesive around the edge, gently clamped with the most awesome clamps ever – clothes pins! (These things are indispensable in my studio!)

The ribbons are half in. The other side of each still need to be sewn in.

The other thing I did was to clean and repaint the case keys and put them on a little skull key holder πŸ™‚

Here the keys are before I cleaned and painted them. The skull is getting some red rhinestone eyes inserted too.

WIP4CaseKeys1w

Eye glue is dried and the keys are cleaned and painted.

WIP4CaseKeys2w

Next time, I think the case will be finished! I have a little more hand painting touch up and then I’ll be sealing the whole thing with varnish and it will be ready for travel πŸ™‚

Thanks for reading!

New Desperately Seeking Susan Skull Case listing on Esty

Good day dolly fans!

I have finished a mini replica dancing skeleton and skull head drum case for 16 dolls. This is a miniature of the drum case carried by Madonna in the film Desperately Seeking Susan. I have made this before (twiceΒ  in the last 10 years!) but each is slightly different due to the hand painting and finishing that goes into it after airbrushing with my custom stencils.

This has been made by the same method I used before, which I lay out in some detail in a previous post. Here’s a link if you’d like to check that out.

Skull Case Blog post the first one anyway, there are several!

It has a pink 100% silk interior, both top and bottom and the top has a useable elastic edged pocket. Top and bottom are padded. For added fun, a few paper accessories (just like in the film) are included, just to get you started! πŸ™‚

Here is a link to the Etsy listing
